1. You get one-on-one training.Affinity Dog Training and Behaviour Modification_Ind_Training

You get individual attention. No need to compete with other owners and dogs for the trainer’s time.  You’ll have the trainer’s undivided attention for the entire lesson, you can ask as many questions as you like and get an immediate answer.

This is a BIGGIE as many group classes tend to ignore any dog that is not “ideal”

  1. You won’t have to worry about missing a lesson.

Going on holiday or sick one week, just call and ask to reschedule or postpone until the following week.  If you’re in a group class and miss one or two lessons, you and your dog fall behind and will have to try and play catch up in future lessons or miss out on important information completely.

  1. Distractions and unique household issues can be taken into account.

Not every home and schedule is the same. The owners specific schedule that dictates availability and other variables, may impact developing the relationship with the dog, and should be taken into account. This most likely would not happen in a  class situation.

On the distraction side, what distracts one dog,  another dog may not care about,  the ability to work on distractions that are “high value” to the individual dog, is a big factor in dog training.

That is if the trainer takes distractions into account, which they should !!!

  1. Socialising and “meet and greets” can be built into a training program.

Lessons can take place in or near a dog park, a busy neighbourhood, or wherever “real life” happens. (some sessions have deliberately been done around shopping centres)

You can practice meeting and greeting people and dogs in a proper way, with one-on-one support from the trainer.

  1. Lessons are tailored to you and your dog’s needs.

People sometimes have individual issues with their dog, that maybe nobody else in a  class situation has, so it can be swept under the rug.

Individual training can be modified, often on the fly, to accommodate the immediate needs.

Often when people mention a problem in a private lesson, it is dealt with head on; on the spot !

This is certainly something to look for in a trainer and a program.

  1. Not wasting money.

With some group classes being very expensive these days, you can run the risk of not having your problems solved in a group situation or missing classes that then leads to falling behind.

With private classes your chances of success are much higher, and sometimes for not that much more money !

  1. The dog will be trained in the home environment, where most of the inappropriate behaviours occur and where the dog spends most of their time.

Many dogs display behaviours that they don’t always display when at a training facility. eg. jump up on people when they come through the door, resource guarding or potty training.

Sometimes more importantly, people underestimate the “environment” when training a dog, this often leads to exclamations like, “they were great at the classes, but when we got home it was a different story !”

You changed the dog’s environment and that DOES have an impact.
